South Porcupine General Hospital 1937-1996
To aid with the delivery of quality health care for Timmins and surrounding communities, the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation was formed in April 1985. We have embarked on very many important campaigns to meet the needs of the hospital and the patients it serves. Since 1985, we invested over $27 million for the construction of T&DH and for the purchase of medical equipment.
The Hospital originated in 1912 as a company mining hospital owned by the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. It was at this time that the President of the Hollinger Mines invited the Sisters of Providence to send personnel to manage and staff the hospital.
It was in January 1927 that the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. graciously donated the hospital to the Sisters of Providence. A few months later in May 1927, the hospital was officially named St. Mary’s Hospital. In 1972, St. Mary’s Hospital became a public hospital, and was renamed St. Mary’s General Hospital. Later on, on December 19, 1978 the St. Mary’s General Hospital Foundation was established.
The 1970's and 1980's signalled an era of prosperity for Timmins and the District of Cochrane. In 1984, the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s General Hospital voted in favour of constructing a new hospital to meet the growing health care needs of the district. A new Timmins and District Hospital Board was established in 1985. In parallel, on April 18 of that same year, the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation was established.
Five years later, on March 20, 1990, both Foundations were amalgamated. On October 15, 1993, a dream came true. The Grand Opening of the new Timmins and District Hospital was celebrated.
Established in April 1985 as a non-profit organization, the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation raises funds for medical equipment for T&DH beyond those available from other sources. The Foundation is committed to fundraising activities through donors and potential donors to support the acquisition of capital equipment, major renovations, and future building expansion. These activities are undertaken for the benefit of the patients of the Timmins and District Hospital.
Life is unpredictable. Whether young or old we cannot predict what health concerns our families and we will be faced with. To ensure that our needs will be met in our own district with state-of-the-art medical equipment, we must support our district hospital-Timmins and District Hospital.
